Respected Reader,

 

The World Memon Organisation (WMO) is an international umbrella organization of the Memon Community serving its community members and humanity at large through its eight chapters around the world namely Pakistan, Middle East, Far East, India, Europe, Africa, North Africa and North America.

 

The WMO is engaged in various welfare activities to alleviate the sufferings of the indigent and underprivileged members of the Memon Community. Two major schemes address two key problems faced by the Memon Community – namely Education & Housing.

 

Education for All

Currently, around 10,000 students are being benefited by this scheme. A sum of Rs. 100 million (US $ 1 million) has been earmarked for the current year 2014-15 for Education up to Intermediate Level. It is expected that the number of students will go up to around 11,000 by the end of 2014.

 

WMO Scholarships for Higher & Professional Education

The WMO, since inception, has provided financial help to needy students of the community to pursue higher and professional education in various fields. There are presently 1,048 such students who are receiving assistance from WMO. The number of students is expected to rise to 1,300 by the end of 2014 for which current annual budget is Rs. 50 million (US $ 500,000).

 

WMO Rehabilitation Scheme

The WMO Rehabilitation Scheme was started in the year 2004 wherein 7,225 applications were received. So far over 2,000applications have been approved for financial assistance for acquiring flats/houses. For the year 2014, WMO needs an amount of Rs. 50 million (US $ 500,000) for the Rehabilitation Scheme.

 

The Memon Industrial & Technical Institute (MITI)

The Memon Industrial & Technical Institute (MITI) was inaugurated on 31^st May 2009. At present, more than 18,000 students (12,000 females and 6,000 males) are being trained per annum in over 50 different technical, vocational and I.T. courses. Since inception, a total of around 50,000 students (male and female) have been trained. The MITI has been approved as a City & Guilds International Center and has also been registered with the Sindh Board of Technical Education.

 

WMO Rozgar & Micro Finance Schemes

Through the courtesy of a generous donor, WMO has distributed under the Rozgar Scheme 58 Auto Rickshaws and 481Sewing Machines, at a cost of Rs. 13,881,290 (US $138,812)  to needy families to enable them to earn a decent livelihood. And through the WMO Micro Finance Scheme, small loans are given to micro entrepreneurs of the Memon Community to help them advance their small businesses. So far, 136 small businesses have been helped.

 

WMO Memon Census Project

The importance of Census of the Memon Community to chalk out appropriate plans for healthcare, education, rehabilitation, etc cannot be overlooked. The WMO has been working on this project for many years and very useful statistical data of the Memon Community has been collected such as socio-economic status, profession, number of family members, education level, etc. WMO has so far collected data of 38,560 families (170,185 individuals), which is estimated to be 25% of the total Memon population residing in Pakistan. Many Memon Jamats of Karachi and Interior Sindh have joined hands with WMO in this endeavor.

 

Respected Sir/Madam, all the noble welfare projects of WMO has been made possible only due to your timely support. We are extremely grateful to all our members, donors and well-wishers who regularly make donations and remit their Zakat to WMO.

 

The current Annual Budget of WMO Pakistan Chapter is around Rs. 200 million (US $ 2 million) which we expect to achieve through your generous support, which would enable WMO to alleviate the sufferings and miseries of the less-fortunate members of the Memon Community. We urge you all to please come forward this year as well and give your Zakat and Donations to WMO.

WMO Youth Wing Pakistan Chapter has been dedicated to bringing a positive social change by organizing informative, motivational seminars and workshops. To continue its mission the Youth Wing organized a session purely dedicated to young ladies of Memon community. The event was named as "Feminar" and it's
aim was to instill a sense of self awareness, social responsibility, and importance of education among the
girls of Memon community.

The event was scheduled on 23 March, 2014 with registrations opened only for girls aged 16‐ 26 years. It was made obligatory for the girls to be accompanied with at least one parent. The event was held at Jade Hall in Arena, Karachi. The Vice President WMO Pakistan Chapter "Mr Shoaib Ismail" also graced the event with his presence with family. The Senior members of Ladies Wing ‐ Madam Hawa Abdullah,
Madam Amina Ganny and her auspicious team members also attended to encourage the Youth team.

The event started at 11:15 am with Quran recitation by one of our dedicated team members, Amna A. Rehman. She then invited the event leader, Reeda Shekhani to officially start the event. The devoted &
dedicated event leader Reeda Sheikhani welcomed the guests and then invited a renowned scholar and trainer Mr. Abbas Hussain to speak on his topic "Parenting for 2020". Abbas Hussain is a seasoned
professional with more than 20 years of experience as a motivational speaker. He spoke about the parenting challenges in 21st century. He highlighted the problems today's parents face in forms of media influences, information overload and deteriorating moral values. He gave some very useful tips to help children gain a sense of responsibility and how parents can adapt to the dynamism of today's society. After his speech,
he was presented with a memior plaque by the chairman Mr. Altaf Vayani.

Ms. Sumrin Imran then spoke to the audience about her experience as woman from a Memon community.
She emphasized the importance of learning about your history, culture and values. She motivated the girls to
never stop the process of learning and to keep growing as responsible citizens. She emphasized education of girls as they were future mothers who would have to face even tougher parenting challenges. Sumrin concluded her speech by inviting Ms. Anupama Pratipati who is the Chief of Political & Economic at the US Consulate Karachi. She spoke about her experiences as a girl from an unprivileged background in India
and how she made her way up the career ladder despite facing hindrances. She also told stories of various courageous women in Pakistan who had managed to earn decent livelihoods despite being challenged by highly unfavorable circumstances. Her stories were a source of inspiration among the girls
and their parents.

Ms. Reeda Shekhani then invited Sumrin to introduce two successful women to the audience. The first was Dr. Farzana who despite being visually impaired had done double masters in Islamic Studies and had also done her PhD in Islamic Studies. Not only that, she belongs to the Memon community and is a proud example. She spoke about the support she received from her family in her achievements. The second was Ms. Sadia Omar who is an occupational therapist, and she encouraged the girls to explore diverse fields of career and education. She was followed by Ms. Shireen Naqvi who in herself is an inspiration for women all over the world. She is not only a very successful trainer but a devoted wife and a dedicated mother. She emphasized the importance of civic sense and how our society utterly lacks it. Our day to day behaviors
shape the way we build our social life. An awareness of our responsibilities can help produce conditions that are conducive to growth and success.

The Vice President WMO, Mr Shoaib Ismail Mangroria appreciated the efforts of the youth wing and
stressed the importance of a socially responsible memon youth. He then presented a plaque to Ms. Shireen
Naqvi.

The chairman Mr. Altaf Vayani thanked all trainers and office bearers of WMOPC specially Mr. Shoaib Ismail for his generous support in all the endeavors taken by the youth wing. He stressed that it was due to his unconditional and unwavering support that the youth wing had been able to accomplish such highly attended and empowering events. He presented Mr. Shoaib Ismail a "Sword" which in Islamic culture a symbol of courage and bravery. Mr. Shoaib is undoubtedly a knight in the shining armor for the unprivileged class of Memon community. The chairman then spoke to the audience about his experience as a father and sang a popular song Maan, which moved the audience to tears. Needless to say Mr. Vayani, is not only an able leader but also an inspiring vocalist. He also presented memoirs in form specially printed "Mugs" to his team and acknowledged Ms. Rehana Gabrani as the best team player of the event due to her untiring
efforts in making this event possible.

The audience was then moved towards the Arena’s RANGOLI Hall where Food Gala was arranged. The audience also had gaming coupons where they could avail games in Arena including bowling, iceskating,
rock‐climbing etc. It proved to be an eventful, fun‐filled and learning day for the audience. WMO youth
wing team at Pakistan managed to achieve its purpose to serve the community by introducing them to the
fruits of knowledge, learning and dedication.

WMO Youth Wing has organised International Youth Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka this year on 21st and 22nd June, 2014.  Topics for this Youth Conference are as below:

2) Language (Memoni) Preservation.

Please give your ideas, comments and feedback for these two topics. Every good and feasible suggestion and idea will be picked in the Youth Conference and will be put forward to the Board Members.

“Developing a human cell model of Parkinson’s disease”

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterised by uncontrollable shaking, slowness of movement and poor cognitive development. It is due to the loss of dopamine containing neurons resulting low levels of dopamine (a chemical messenger) production in the region of the brain which controls the movement and balance. This dopamine deficiency leads to the development of PD.

One of the weaknesses of the existing approaches in PD research is the lack of relevant human model. Although PD is a disease only found in Human, the lack of relevant human model has led the scientific community to use animal models and different cell models which unfortunately have some limitations.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to create a human-related model and find the mechanism of the development of PD in a single dopamine-containing neuron, which will be essential to elucidate the mechanism (s) of cell death.

The aim of this seminar is to present the validity of our Human cellular model for PD and update the local community on the developments of PD research at the University of Bedfordshire.

Principal Lecturer in Biochemistry and Course Leader for Biomedical Science

Bushra's PhD was related to the study of neurodegenerative disorders, learning and memory. After completion of her PhD she moved to the USA for post-doctoral studies and joined Dr Martha Pierson's lab at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston Texas followed by Scott-Rotchey Research Center, Auburn University Alabama. Her post-doctoral studies were related to epilepsy, programmed cell death and gene therapy.

On arriving in the UK she joined Dr Patrick Anderson's lab at the University College London (UCL). There, her project was to determine the role of certain genes involved in axonal regeneration following brain injury using gene therapy technology, she joined the University of Bedfordshire in 2005.

• The conditional inactivation of genes using Cre recombinase system and gene therapy technology. Inactivating genes in vivo is an important technique for establishing their function in the adult nervous system.
• The role of RNA binding protein(s) in regulation of cytoskeletal genes in rat brain and in embryonic cortical cultured cells under both normal and RNA binding protein's over expressed conditions utilizing viral vectors to transfer the gene to non-dividing cells. 
• Stem cell research, which offers great potential to treat neurodegenerative disorders.
